HARLEY STRETEN

Name: Harley Streten

Aka: Flume, What So Not

Labels: Future Classic, Sweat it out

Since Harley started teaching at Liveschool we’ve had to update this page almost every other week, his achievements have just rolled that fast. Our youngest trainer at the time, his talents were obvious when we first asked him to join our roster of expert music production trainers in 2011.

At age 19 he signed to Future Classic, first getting picked up by them through an ‘originals’ competition (he came second), and this was followed quickly by signing with DJ Ajax’s then-new imprint Sweat It Out for his uptempto collab What So Not. Along with production partner (and Liveschool graduate) Emoh Instead, What So Not was getting noticed, then released on vinyl 12″ by Diplo’s Mad Decent label.

In between teaching our music production courses he played the first Flume live show (on his 20th birthday). The year that followed was leaps and bounds – perform at the Opera House, countless remixes, national tours, more Ableton live teaching, a global remix comp of his tune involving Beatport, Ableton and group remix efforts at 7 Ableton User Groups around Australia, then releases debut album (a week after his 21st birthday), and promptly goes to #1 on the iTunes Album chart – knocking One Direction off the top spot within a few days.

The debut album went Platinum, followed by relentless sold-out tours around the globe. As his final gig with us we collaborated on a special project for the Deluxe Edition release of the Flume Album: A Beginners Introduction to Music Production with Flume and Liveschool.

The sophomore album Skin was an equally huge success.

Then he won a Grammy award for best electronic album.
